2007 Annual Report

The following information will provide you with a summary of the activities involving the Bel Aire Police Department for the calendar year 2007.  The statistical information was collected from several sources including, but not limited to, the Wichita Sedgwick County Emergency 911 Center, Bel Aire Municipal Court, City Treasurer, City of Bel Aire and the Bel Aire Police Department.

Total Number of Calls for Service: 5,783

There is a total of 260 working days in a calendar year.  As a result of the number of calls for service, the officers averaged 22.24 contacts per day.

The Police Department arrested a total of 37 persons for either Part I or Part II offenses.  Officers spend an average of 30 hours performing investigative follow up per month for a total of 1,560 hours for 2007 as a result of the above reported cases. In addition to the statistics above, Bel Aire Police Department Officers responded to the following additional activities during 2007:

Traffic

Traffic enforcement by the Bel Aire Police Officers for the year 2007 was very active.  Officers conducted a total of 2,684 traffic stops.  The following table breaks down the actions take by Bel Aire Officers during traffic stops for 2007. Fine Accessed totaled $126,493.

Bel Aire Officers assisted the Sedgwick County Fire Department and Sedgwick county EMS with a total of 137 calls for assistance ranging in nature from medical calls to traffic control for house fires.  Bel Aire officers responded to a total of 7 death calls in 2007 all of which were related to medical situations.

Bel Aire Officers responded to 22 additional assistance calls from the city in 2007.

Municipal Court

The Municipal Court of Bel Aire handles minor offenses and violations of City ordinance. The following statistics are a result of the Bel Aire Police Department working with the Municipal Court system:

  • In 2007 there were a total of 1,237 cases filed in Municipal Court.
  • There were a total of 463 active warrants in the system.
  • 185 warrants were issued by the Court in 2007.
  • 182 of those warrants were served/cleared by officers.
  • 85 UCC’s were issued with 107 total charges.
  • A total of 253 persons were incarcerated in the Sedgwick County Jail spending a total of 1,365 days.

Conclusion 

In conclusion, the Bel Aire Police Department has shown an overall increase in the number of calls for service of 28% over 2006.  An Increase in the overall number of cases reported to the department of 20% is an indication that our city of growing and with growth comes increased responsibility and accountability.  Department personnel have worked diligently to maintain the Core Values and Mission Statement of the department by gaining the trust and respect of the community.  Trust issues between the department and the community was a problem last year.  When the community trusts their law enforcement personnel they will begin to interact better and will not be afraid to call the department for help.  Our Community Policing efforts throughout the year has proven to be very successful.  The city of engaged in a number of projects to stimulate economic growth.  With the possibility of new schools and the establishment of the Industrial complex along with the new housing developments taking place, Bel Aire will prosper and with the future will come even greater improvements and responsibility.
