2008 Annual ReportThe report will provide you with a summary of the activities the Police Department participated in during the calendar year of 2008.  The statistical information was collected from a variety of sources including but not limited to the Wichita Sedgwick County Emergency 911 Center, Bel Aire Municipal Court, The City Clerk, and the Bel Aire Police Department.

Total Number of Calls for Service: 6,451

There is a total of 260 working days in a calendar year.  As a result of the number of calls for service, the officers averaged 24.81 contacts per day (twenty-four hour period).

The Police Department arrested a total of 250 persons on a variety of criminal offenses, traffic offenses, City of Bel Aire Municipal Court warrants, and outside agency warrants.  Arrests are broken down in the following categories;

Traffic

Traffic enforcement by the Bel Aire Police Officers for the year 2008 was very active.  Officers conducted a total of 2,944 traffic stops.  The following table breaks down the actions take by Bel Aire Officers during traffic stops for 2008.

Bel Aire Officers assisted the Sedgwick County Fire Department and Sedgwick county EMS with a total of 154 calls for assistance ranging in nature from medical calls to traffic control for house fires.  Bel Aire officers responded to a total of 5 death calls in 2008 all of which were related to medical situations.

Bel Aire Officers were dispatched to assist other law enforcement agencies a total of 185 times during this time period.

 

Municipal Court

The Municipal Court of Bel Aire handles minor offenses and violations of City ordinance. The following statistics are a result of the Bel Aire Police Department working with the Municipal Court system:

  • In 2008 there were a total of 1,506 cases filed in Municipal Court.
  • There were a total of 434 active warrants in the system.
  • 137 warrants were issued by the Court in 2008.
  • 132 of those warrants were served/cleared by officers.
  • 109 UCC's were issued with 120 total charges.
  • The Bel Aire Municipal Court collected a total of $234,407.10 as a result of fines accessed, court costs, and warrant fees.

Conclusion 

In conclusion, the Bel Aire Police Department has shown an overall increase in the number of calls for service of 10.36% over 2007.  An Increase in the overall number of cases reported to the department of 1.7% is an indication that our city of growing and with growth comes increased responsibility and accountability.  Department personnel have worked diligently to maintain the Core Values and Mission Statement of the department by gaining the trust and respect of the community.  The community has responded well to our events last year.  Community policing efforts throughout the year has proven to be very successful.  The Senior Volunteer patrol has been updating store reports, doing vacation home checks and contacting elderly who may not have any visitors.
